Carthaginian soldier and statesman.
Hannibal crossed the Alps in 218 B.C. with 37 elephants and a large mercenary army. He defeated Roman armies at Ticinus, Trebia, Trasimene and Cannae. He lacked the resources to attack Rome itself and was recalled to Africa in 203 B.C.
Hannibal was defeated by Scipio Africanus at Zama in 202 B.C.
