In this painting by Mariusz Kosik, Imperial Roman Legionaries are under attack by a Gallic Cavalry Warband. The date is circa 1st century A.D. At that time Roman armies pushed North and East out of Gaul to subdue much of Germania, leaving many territories open to internal revolts. The painting doesn’t report a battle in particular. It simply depicts the struggle of the Roman Army to keep the conquered territories under control.
